NetOn participates in the 4th Business Forum on Self-Consumption organized by elEconomista

Our CEO, Alberto Martín Rivals, took part in the IV Business Forum on Self-Consumption together with Alejandro Tejero-Garcés Galve (Visalia), Shalina Chandnani (Repsol), Mateo Andrada-Vanderwilde (Finlight), Carlos Costa Rausa (Octopus Energy) and Carlos Gallar Romero (FACTOR ENERGIA).

During the roundtable discussion, the important role that self-consumption is already playing in Spain’s energy sector was highlighted:

• Self-consumption continues to grow at a strong pace, with around 1 GW installed during 2025
• Installed capacity has already exceeded 9 GW (more than nuclear power)
• Of this, almost half corresponds to industrial self-consumption, which is the fastest-growing segment (around +0.7 GW in 2025)
• Despite low wholesale market prices, self-consumption remains the cheapest form of electricity supply when considering charges, tolls and balancing services paid by the end consumer
• It is helping to alleviate the serious problem of grid saturation by bringing renewable generation closer to the end consumer and by providing additional capacity to industries for electrification and decarbonization

The discussion also highlighted the major challenges that need to be addressed to ensure continued development of self-consumption:

• Eliminating bureaucratic barriers to permitting, especially for collective self-consumption
• Increasing the maximum distances for self-consumption through the grid, aligning them for rooftop installations and installations on any type of land (not only industrial land, as intended by the failed RD 16/2025)
• Facilitating the injection of surplus energy by allowing the customer’s contracted capacity to be used in both directions (as is the case, for example, in Italy) and simplifying its commercialization
• Providing incentives (preferably tax incentives) for behind-the-meter storage, which is a much more efficient deployment model than “standalone”
• Ensuring continuity of support programs for industrial decarbonization without discriminating against ground-mounted self-consumption (as happened in the latest PERTE call)
